Too Much Screen Time Damages Your Eyes – Learn How to Protect Them

People, especially the younger generation, have become too addicted to electronic gadgets using them almost every hour of each day.

While it’s true that you can use these to connect to people around the world and they can be very informative and entertaining, using these do have a downside-digital eye strain.

Those who have experienced discomfort after staring at an electronic device for over two hours suffer from eye strain which has become more common each day.

Issue of too much screen time

According to studies, over 83% of Americans who use electronic devices for over two hours with more than half of them using two or more devices at the same time experience digital eye strain.

There seems to be no solution to completely disconnecting these users from their “addiction” but there are some pointers they can do to protect their eyes from this condition.

Don’t forget to blink!

Often, when looking at the screen, you don’t blink as frequently. According to ophthalmologists, the normal blinking rate can be about 15 times per minute.

This goes down to between 5 – 7 blinks each minute when you stare at screens. Keep in mind that blinking has a very important function, it moistens your eye’s surface.

This is a very simple yet effective solution to eye strain. Make it a conscious effort to blink more often when using digital devices. Maybe just as a reminder, you can post a note at the corner of your computer screen that says “Blink!”

Try the 20-20-20 method

This is another helpful tip and so easy to remember. To do this, take a break for 20-seconds every 20 minutes by looking at an object that is 20-feet away.

Modify your workspace

If you still haven’t done this, time to do some changes on your workspace. It’s recommended to position yourself at an arm’s distance away from the computer screen.

Next, lower your computer screen so the center is 4 – 8 inches below your eye level and 20 – 28 inches away from your eyes. Finally, position the screen to avoid the glare from windows and overhead lights.

Other ways to protect your eyes

There are many other ways to protect your eyes from digital eye strain. Many of us aren’t even aware that you can avoid this condition through simplest yet very effective ways.

For one, you can increase the font size. This helps define more clearly the text on the screen.

Also, try reducing the glare. Matte filters and softer lighting can decrease the glare on your devices. You may also want to have your eyes checked. Have your eyes checked every 1 to 2 years?

Do this to ensure that your eyes remain healthy and sharp. Finally, eat the right foods too. The right nutrients in your foods can help prevent eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and other issues.

There are many foods that promote eye health, especially whole foods which contain high amounts of antioxidants and vitamins.

To have a synergistic healing effect, the foods taken should have a combination of the right nutrients. For your eyes, the recommended foods include sweet potatoes, strawberries, salmon, carrots, and green tea.
